Putting psychology into practice

Author: Dr Sam Cooley

Things I do: Clinical practice I’m a Chartered Clinical Psychologist registered with and regulated by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Psychological Society (BPS). I work independently, seeing children and adults for psychological assessment and therapy. I most often work with anxiety, depression, panic, stress, burnout, trauma, neurodiversity, physical health, sport, and exercise. I use a person-centred approach, informed by acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion focussed therapy (CFT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). I also have a specialist interest in outdoor therapy and I’m currently the Honorary Treasurer of the British Psychological Society’s Faculty of Holistic Psychology. Research and teaching I enjoy research and regularly publish in academic journals, present at conferences and review/edit articles for psychological journals. I also teach, give lectures/seminars and supervise research students. Most my research activities are at the University of Leicester where I work part-time on the clinical psychology doctoral training programme (DClinPsy), and at the University of Birmingham, where I’m an associate research fellow. Corporate I value the application of psychology within organisations. Supporting businesses to shape working environments that foster psychological growth, understanding and well-being. I provide training and consultancy on topics such as mental health, positive psychology, mindfulness, nature connection, behaviour change, learning transfer, resilience and self-regulation. Things I’ve done: Education and qualifications First Class BSc (with hons) in Sport and Exercise Sciences, with a particular focus on sport and exercise psychology. Awarded by the University of Birmingham in 2011. Ph.D in the social and emotional development obtained through outdoor adventure activities. Awarded by the University of Birmingham in 2015. 3-year postdoc at the University of Birmingham in youth homelessness, psychological skills training and outdoor learning (2014-2017). 1-year postdoc at the University of Birmingham working with the NHS on psychologically informed parenting strategies (2017-2018). Chartered Psychologist awarded by the British Psychological Society in 2017 (CPsychol). Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy). Awarded by the University of Leicester in 2021. Things I’m passionate about: Working with people to support wellbeing, resilience, goal attainment and life satisfaction. Psychological skills and techniques that we can all benefit from regardless of who we are and what we do. The therapeutic properties of spending time outdoors. The scientist-practitioner model (i.e., evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence). Incorporating mindfulness into daily living (because it doesn’t come naturally to me!). Connecting with others who have shared interests.
